Danny Kanell: Bucs In; Eagles Out
Why the Buccaneers are in and the Eagles are out of the playoffs
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers clinched a playoff berth with a 30-24 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The win, coupled with the Philadelphia Eagles' 20-14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, means that the Buccaneers will finish the season with a 10-7 record, while the Eagles will finish 9-8.
The Buccaneers' victory was a tale of two halves. In the first half, the Buccaneers' offense struggled to get anything going, and the Panthers took a 17-0 lead into the locker room.
However, the Buccaneers came out firing in the second half. Quarterback Tom Brady threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns, and running back Leonard Fournette rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown.
What went wrong for the Eagles?
The Eagles' loss to the Cowboys was a disappointing end to a season that began with so much promise. The Eagles were 8-0 at one point, but they lost five of their last six games to finish the season 9-8.
There were a number of factors that contributed to the Eagles' collapse. One was the loss of quarterback Jalen Hurts to a shoulder injury. Hurts was injured in the Eagles' Week 15 loss to the Chicago Bears, and he missed the final two games of the season.
Another factor was the Eagles' poor play on defense. The Eagles allowed 28 points per game over their last six games, and they were unable to get enough stops when they needed them most.
What's next for the Buccaneers and Eagles?
The Buccaneers will now face the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Wild Card Round. The Cowboys won the NFC East with a 12-5 record, and they are one of the hottest teams in the NFL.
The Eagles will have to wait until next season to try to make another run at the playoffs. The Eagles have a lot of talent on their roster, but they need to find a way to stay healthy and play more consistently.
