A Russian tourist has died after being attacked by a shark off the coast of Egypt's Red Sea resort city of Hurghada. Officials have since closed several beaches on the country's Red Sea coast and banned swimming near the beach where the attack occurred. This marks the second fatal shark attack in Egypt in 2022, both of which took place in Hurghada. The other victim was an Austrian tourist who was killed in July.
The latest victim, identified as Vladimir Popov, was relaxing by the beach with his father when he was attacked. Eyewitnesses reported hearing Popov scream for his father before he was dragged underwater. The shark, which was estimated to be 10 feet long, was eventually beaten to death by locals who rushed to help.
Egyptian authorities are investigating the incident and have advised tourists to exercise caution when swimming in the area. They have also banned swimming near the beach where the attack occurred.
