EU Bans TikTok on Staff Devices
Concerns over Data Security and Privacy
European Parliament, Commission, and Council United in Decision
The European Parliament, European Commission, and the EU Council have jointly banned TikTok from staff devices. The decision comes amidst growing concerns over the Chinese-owned app's data security and privacy practices.
The European Commission, the EU's executive body, initiated the ban last month following internal security assessments. The ban applies to both personal and work-issued devices and affects some 32,000 staff members.
"The measure aims to protect the Commission against potential cybersecurity threats and actions that could be exploited for cyberattacks against the corporate environment of the Commission," the Commission stated.
The European Parliament followed suit on Tuesday, banning TikTok from all staff devices, including laptops and phones. The ban was prompted by a cybersecurity alert from the Parliament's IT services.
The Council, the representative body of EU member states, is also considering a ban, but no decision has been made yet.
The bans reflect broader concerns among Western governments about the potential risks posed by TikTok. The United States has already banned TikTok from government-issued devices, and the UK is considering similar measures.
